After battling with my health insurance, I finally got a sleep study and MSLT approved and completed it today.

My sister has narcolepsy and for years has insisted that I do, too. I blew her off because I always either a)had an infant or b)was taking Adderall for dx'd ADD. Neither a or b are applicable anymore, and it's become glaringly apparent that something is up with me.

Last night I know I fell asleep within minutes. I don't remember much about the night except I felt like the tech's voice was constantly piping in asking me to change positions or some other thing. My sleep felt light and broken, but that's pretty normal for me. I couldn't remember any dreams.

In the morning I was chomping at the bit for that first nap. I know I slept. I do not know if I dreamed. When she asked that question, I told her that I had a "dream like thought about my children getting into paper grocery bags to go to the zoo" ... Obviously I was still groggy when sharing this information!

My second nap I slept but had no dreamy anything. The third nap I didn't think I slept, because hyping jerks kept waking me up, but she gave me 20 minutes so maybe I slept? The fourth nap I had another dream like thought. After that, she came in and said they had enough data and I could go home.

My questions (for now): are those "dream like thoughts" actual dreams? I have no idea how to know if I ever entered REM. How long does it usually take to get results? How do I get this goop out of my hair?

I am not a patient person in the best of circumstances, but my insurance company put me through the ringer so much with this that part of me is really praying for a N dx, just to say "I told you so!"

I slept 3 out of 4 naps. I had those dreamlike thoughts in the 3 I slept in. I call it pre dreaming. I only remember one of them turning into an actual dream. That was the one in which I was told I went into REM. But they did consider it sleeping when I was pre dreaming in the other naps because it was counted in the the time for my sleep latency. But there was no REM during those. My avg sleep latency was 2.9 min.

I had my study on Sat/Sun and I got my results on Tuesday morning. I was technically dx with Hypersomnia since there was only one REM but the dr thinks I have narcolepsy based on my avg sleep latency, my symptoms and the sleepiness scale. He is treating me with xyrem.

I don't have any technical terms but I can let you know our experience with my son.  He fell asleep for all 5 naps, and immediately was in REM.  He complains about not being able to "see" his dreams anymore and it makes him really upset.   From the moment he closes his eyes he falls asleep and you can see his eyes moving under his eyelids.  I would think these thoughts you are having, are actual dreams and you just aren't remembering the rest.  We did the test on Friday and saw the Neurologist on Wednesday for his diagnosis.  When is your appointment?  Hopefully you can see them soon and get a better indication of what is going on.

I had those dream-like thoughts during my MSLT. I don't think they counted as "sleep" or "REM sleep" in my test. My sleep specialist explained what he saw in the brain waves as "drifting off to sleep", but they didn't last long enough to count "sleep", when scoring the MSLT. Yours might be different though. Hopefully you don't have to wait too long for your results. I got my results at my follow up appointment with my doctor, 10 days after my MSLT. Sometimes I think of those dream-like thoughts as HH, as I can be aware of my current surroundings, while they are happening.

To get the glue stuff out of your hair, you could try combing conditioner through your hair , then rinsing it out with shampoo. I had to do that a few times to get it out.

Interesting, thanks. I guess there's really no way to differentiate between stage one and REM through speculation alone. I know eventually I was fast asleep for three of the four but I really don't know what that means. For some reason an IH dx would upset me. I can't pinpoint why though.

Oh! And I suppose my appointment will be when my results are in. Hopefully soon! I'm so curious!

I thought I would be upset about the IH dx but my dr said it was just a technicality and he is treating me with the same meds. He is fairly sure I have N. so when I talk to my friends and family I say it is N rather than IH.

I am getting the first month of xyrem for free but the dr seemed confident that he can get my insurance to cover it. We will see.

Oh. I didn't see the question about the goop the first time I read it. I just soaked in the tub first for a while before shampooing. It worked pretty well. I assume by now you got it out though.

Ugh that goop stuff is awful! I just had to shampoo over and over and comb it out.
