Just curious if anyone else takes ambien. I take it but have not been able to sleep. I was on Halcion for a long time and just recently stopped it. I didn't go off the halcion gradually, which may be my problem. I feel horrible. Anxiety, depression, lack of desire {for anything, which doesn't do real well when you're married}. That's another thing, do narcoleptics have trouble with their sex drive? not to get gross or anything, just wondering if this is a medical issue. After having a child 2yrs. ago my body went nuts. I don't know if I'll ever recover fully but am trying to stay as normal as possible for my family. Tips on how to stay asleep??

Please talk to your sleep doctor as soon as you can. If you don't have a sleep doctor, then talk to your doctor about seeing a sleep doctor. If you don't already know, it sounds like you have narcolepsy. Taking sleeping pills are NOT healthy for people with narcolepsy. I know everything must be tough for you, but the absolute best option to go is to go see a sleep doctor and talk to him/her about your issues. It will change your life for the better. These are all typical symptoms and I had many if not all of these. I now am on good medicine and live almost a completely normal live. Please let me know what happens, best of luck to you. It will get better. I suggest stoping all sleep medication and and seeing a doctor to get a referral to go see a sleep doctor. Good luck.

I have hypersomnolence. I've been on sleeping pills for years. I was on Adderall and Halcion for years. Just switched sleep doctors recently and he pulls a 180 on me and starts me on Nuvigil and Ambien. I feel awful and called the office today begging for him to put me back on Adderall. This is sortof how I felt after my son was born. When I don't get a good night's rest, this happens. will try and wean off halcion but I can't have nothing for sleep or else I won't sleep. It seems contradictory to have hypersomnolence but not be able to sleep. Unless I've just been on pills too long that I can't be without them. I don't know. All I know is that when I was completely med free during my pregnancy I still didn't sleep. I don't know what to do anymore.

Ok. Halcion is a Benzodiazapine. Discontinuing Benzos requires a slow taper. Benzos also decrease slow wave and REM sleep. Abrupt discontinuation of Benzos causes reound insomnia and rebound REM. I had been incorrectly diagnosed and treated with a Benzo and experienced some of the same symptoms.

I suggest this resource which I highly recommend: http://recovery-road.org/ I was not properly guided through withdrawal and it was rough. This will help you to avoid what I experienced.

A few questions for you:

Have you had a sleep study (PSG and MSLT)? If so, were you on Halcion at the time? The reason I ask, Benzos, like Halcion, will block REM and invalidate a sleep study.

Is your sleep doctor 1. Board Certified in Sleep Medicine and what is his/her primary specialty. Or, 2. a Sleep Medicine Specialist, fellowship trained in Sleep Medicine? The reason I ask is because Sleep Medicine is still a new field and all are not equal.
2. is the best qualified to make an accurate diagnosis.

How was your diagnosis made for Hypersomnia and was Narcolepsy ever ruled out. If you could answer these questions, I may have some specific suggestions for you.

I took ambien a few times before I was DXed and I hated that stuff it was a truly terrible experience. Didnt help me sleep but helped me have terrible hallucinations and paralysis.

As far as your sex drive, I think the meds are what zapped it for you. That combined with not being properly treated and just the mere fact you "recently" had a child could also effect you.

Tips about staying asleep, take Hanks advice... once you are able get another sleep test as well as a MSLT... Know that when getting off the Benzos sleep is going to be dreadful :( sorry... but if you can get a clear DX then you have options! This weekend I promise I will write that post about natural ways to help with the N... there are foods to avoid during the day and foods to eat a night... supplements to take in the am and then the pm... everything that you can do to help your body rest... I have only been able to do about half of the suggestions... But, after I move I am going to try it full heartily.

Sounds like you a have a long road ahead of you... But, I promise it will be worth it in the end... for you and your family... Now that I have been properly treated lots of things in my life have changed for the better... including my sex drive ;)
