Jolting While Falling Asleep

45 posts in this topic

Yes, yes...I've experienced these electric jerks/jolts early into sleep/awake as well. Incidentally, I've also been jolted awake by a jerk, but we broke up long ago, so no worries. I've seen my dog, cat, friends, even my mother jolt while asleep when I was a kid, so I'm sure it's not all that unusual per se. Now, while I've never been hit by lightning, I do see lightning when I close my eyes at night--flashes, strobe like flashing--very annoying. As an artist, the images/effects/incessant dreams that stream through my head as I try to go to sleep are most helpful, however not as helpful in the -time to go to sleep and rest- department.

I find that I twitch quite a bit as well, however I'm pretty sure this is due to my uppers b/c as I was instructed to increase the dose of the stimulant, the twitching became more evident. Right now, my left forefinger twitches pretty much all day long, however it's definitely more prevalent at night while watching television etc and even more so if I'm especially exhausted, sick or run down. My thigh muscles also tend to twitch quite a bit, but at this point I rarely make note of oddities, as I'm just trying to make the best of my condition and focus on things other than what my body is or is not doing properly.

Funny story: I was riding in a friend's car over the summer and all of a sudden my friend says to me "oh my God, is your ass on fire?" I said, "actually, yes it is, how did you know that?!" And she says, "well b/c your seat warmer is on, I'm sorry I must have accidentally bumped the button." Here's the ironic part: After 15 years of enduring, searching and observing my condition and all of the oddities related to it, when I do have a symptom/feeling that's different than usual, I tend to just think, "eh, well...it's part of N and it is what it is." Of course, I wouldn't ignore something that was really out of line b/c that is quite common for those with a chronic condition to do, while it can be a dangerous thing to chalk another symptom up to N when in fact it could indeed be something more serious.

However, in this instance, I certainly wasn't going to get all bent out of shape when I was sitting there thinking in my head, "huh. my butt is totally on fire...great...okay....well, i guess my butt is just gonna be on fire now."

Very, very odd.

Wow! I just came across this dialogue as I was about to post my message about “electric jolts!” But since I already wrote it, here it is:

Hi all – I was diagnosed with narcolepsy two years ago and don’t have cataplexy. However, a few weeks ago I needed to make some decisions about a lawsuit I have against someone I used to date who owes me a lot of money. So it is obviously a very stressful and emotional situation for me. Twice in one day, and six times the following evening right after I talked to my attorney, I felt what can best be described as an electrical charge in my head. It was as if I could hear and feel the charge in my brain. The “sound” was similar to the one made by an electrical transformer when it is struck my lightening or shorted-out by something else. The first few times it happened it probably lasted a second or two, the other instances were probably three seconds or so, but its hard to tell. I haven’t experienced this since those two days a few weeks ago, but I also haven’t needed to spend time thinking about the lawsuit since then either! Has anyone else experienced “electrical charges” like this? Do you think it is related to cataplexy? The only other thing I could think of is maybe a spike in blood pressure, but my blood pressure has always been fine.

Any thoughts on this are appreciated!

Oh I was going to reply to this days ago and then something happened to my computer and I forgot.

I get what I call "zings" that sounds just like what you described. It happened a lot if I was late for my klonopin when I took that years ago. It also happened when I started taking L-Tyrosine, but stopped after a couple of days when my body adjusted. I take L-Tyrosine to boost alertness...its supposed to help stimulate neurons. I can tell you it does!

All I can think is that it's when my neurons start to become hyperactive. It also happens if I sleep too "hard" and have too much REM. Then I hear and feel "zings" all day whenever I move my eyes. I have a co-worker that experienced the same thing when she stopped taking Paxil (tapered, of course.) It's weird for sure, but probably not harmful. It feels like an electric shock goes through my head and I hear a "zing!" You are not alone.

Neurological diseases are so weird. This is the same topic that I made my parasitic conjoined twins analogy in a previous topic. I really believe that various neurological symptoms piggy back on each other. Everybody on this site has "weird" symptoms. I'm like you, anytime that I experience something new I rack it up to N and have the same "eh, well...it's part of N and it is what it is." attitude.

Anyone else having freezing cold spots on their body?

"Ass on fire" is great. The one and only good thing about N separating my husband and me from sleeping in the same bedroom (in regards to "ass on fire") is that my husband seems to develop really horrible gas while he's asleep. It's so bad that I wake up gagging. I feel like it's my nose on fire, though. And my lungs, my throat, ....

I've heard of this being called "Hypnotic Jerk." I'm not really sure if this is what you are referring to. I have never had pain with this, but I often wake myself up with the jerking of my body, usually my legs. I have even realized that I'm doing it in the daytime now when I think I'm wide awake.

Idiopathic hypersomnolence is pretty much narcolepsy, but more mild. Which is definitely a good thing for you! My boyfriend's cousin has it, and she was diagnosed very early, in her teens actually.

When were you diagnosed? Have you consulted any other doctors about this? Did you have a sleep test done for narcolepsy or just apnea? Some people who have apnea have a problem w/ their brain not telling them when to breathe. It is possible you could have that issue? It might be worth mentioning to someone.

The jerk you get when first falling asleep is call a hypnic jerk as Irishhh stated. It is completely normal even among completely healthy individuals. My girlfriend has them all the time and I have them too. Researchers believe the brain thinks you are falling when all your muscles relax upon falling asleep and it makes your muscles suddenly tighten to jerk you back upright. It appears to be brain confusion caused by stress, anxieties or just being in an uncomfortable position. :)

Sleeplesssleeper, interesting to note that my mom has MS. I should ask her if she experiences that. And my mom, she gets hypnogogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis when she naps...

Erin

I've now gotten electric painful jolts in the palms of my hands and the bottoms of my feet.

Today I saw the specialist, and guess what he's testing me for (with another MRI?)

I hope we get tons of feed back on this subject.... I am wondering if I should be worried about it or not... since the lightning thing I figure I would give it a year or so before I brought it up.... but now...hmmm..... Great subject Erin thank you for bring this up!

To sleeplesssleeper: I cant believe you are working with wheights! OMG I would drop them for sure! OUCH! Your are crazy brave for it!!!

I do get that extra Jolt/Buzz and yes, sometimes it hurts really bad. I talked with my psychiatrist and she said its like a mioclonic epilepsy/seizure kind of thing.

And sometimes I have done stuff like almost get thrown out of my chair by this "electric thing". That is no fun when you wake up on your hands and knees and your knees aren't that young anymore. Also, I have hit my face sometimes on my computer keyboard.

Sounds funny but doesn't feel funny, lol. <_<

Its ALWAYS K. I am consistent if nothing else. :P

These jolts are normal as a couple of you have stated. My girlfriend, my kids and I get them all the time. It is believe they are caused by the brain falling into a deeper sleep and the body is out of sync, or the brain is confused while the muscles relax and it thinks you are falling. Just close your eyes and consider it a normal symptom for those with narcolepsy or without.

Oh, just to make sure, look at your hands and make sure they are not inserted in an electrical outlet. If they are safely away from an outlet, go back to sleep. If they are in an outlet, call 911.

What about if you find yourself blow drying your hair in the shower, is that a 911 moment?

That happened to me. My ex-wife threw the hair dryer in the shower while I was in there. Thank God she forgot it had to be plugged in. I still called 911...lol

bumping up the jolting post

but one question first, if both your hands are in a socket, how do you dial the phone?

ok serious part though. while on effexor i had a lot of jitteries and twitches and jolting. just thought i'd mention that and see if its a common link. i know henry hated effexor, it has also been evil for me. i was at the sleep doc this week and changed back to celexa. he said effexor is great for 8-9/10 people, but really not great for the rest

For me Effexor was great... until I had to get off of it. That was the worst nightmare ever... so bad that I wish I'd have never gone on it in the first place.

i tend to do the hypnic jerk thing when i know I'm asleep butmy brain is still on. Or just after an early dream. At least I notice it a lot then.

I do that too. Sometimes I talk with family members as I'm falling asleep as though they were part of the dream. Sometimes I start dreaming just before I fall asleep. My family is used to it. They always say, "Whatever!" At least I have nice dreams and the early sleep stage hallucinations are pleasant. I do jerk awake as I'm falling asleep. Have you ever snapped awake in the middle of the night and run to the kitchen thinking you were late to work? ...on your day off? My family is used to that, too. My daughter just says, "Go back to bed, Mom!" and it seems to break the spell. However, it is prudent to always wear pajamas when you go to bed. Thank goodness we didn't have company over. One time I woke up in the middle of the night, got dressed and drove all of the way to work. When I got there I realized that it was Saturday and I had dreamed it was Monday. That only happened once. I now have an alarm clock that shows the day of the week, which is very helpful to someone with narcolepsy. I think everyone "jolts" once in a while when falling asleep. I've seen lots of non-narcoleptic people do it. I've also seen pets do it.
