Anyways, I went to the sleep dr. and did the MSLT. I fell into REM sleep very quickly on all of my naps, and I was diagnosed w/ Narcolepsy. Was put on Provigil 200mg 2x a day. It was very helpful, but I noticed I'd still get 'the nods' sometimes mid afternoon, if I was extremely tired (ie big sleep deficit). But then again, doesn't this happen to most 'normal' people when theyre over tired? Anyways, I was advised by my doctor to up the dose to 400mg 2x/day. I did this for a few days but it made me feel tweaked out and nauseaus so I asked for a different med. He gave me adderall XR 20mg 1x/morning. This was perfect. I may have been a little overly medicated, but I loved it. I had more motivation, NEVER had 'the nods' and the impact of my disorder on my life was extremely minimal. I generally stayed with adderall...at one point I was on 200mg provigil and 10mg adderall xr per day, which was good too. Then I moved down to only 10mg of adderall xr daily with no provigil. This actually worked fine too. Somewhere during this time I did ANOTHER MSLT which gave me similar results. I always wonder about these things though, because they only let me get 6-7 hrs of sleep before doing the test, and I am ALWAYS dead tired with that little sleep, meds or not!!
Fast forward about 2 years or so, to Winter 2007. I was taken off adderall and put back on Provigil 200mg 2x daily. I noticed it seemed to make me excessively thirsty, so I lowered my dose. I also notice that when I spaced the doses, it didn't seem as effective. So currently I take 300mg all together each morning after I eat (for some reason it doesn't affect me quite the same if I take it before I eat..).
Whew, I didn't mean to even get into all that med history. More important are the patterns I have noticed that have been consistent through the years that cause me to WONDER if my diagnosis really IS Narcolepsy:
1) I am ALWAYS, regardless of if I have slept 10 hrs, or stayed up all night, I am ALWAYS more motivated, energized and awake at NIGHT. For example, I wake up at 9am daily and I am most energized from like 7pm to 12/1am! I used to think this was because of my medicine, but it seems to happen even if I haven't taken my meds..so I don't think its related...
2) It is NEVER easy for me to get out of bed. I NEVER feel refreshed in the morning. I can sleep 12 hours, and have to force myself to get out of bed.
3) I feel tired (to the point where I want to lay down for a nap an hour or two after I've just woken up and taken my meds) for the first half of the day REGARDLESS of if I am well rested or not. Often times, especially when I was on adderall, I felt MORE tired for the hour or so immediately after taking my meds, then it slowly levels out.
I exercise at least 3 times a week for 30-90 minutes. And I eat pretty healthy...not much sugar.
If you read this far, congrats and thank you very much.
Anyone have any ideas? Is this real narcolepsy? Could it be something more, or something else? Circadian rhythm disorder, etc?
WOW... you just described me to a T. Even down to the eating a Low sugar diet and exercise. Ive been working on this for ayear after having in for about 15 years.
I also started question the diagnosis recently, because i can make dreams happen. I know what my combination is.
Or i may just be fooling myself. because if you can make your self have sleep onset of 4.3 minutes and dream under their guidlines in the short naps.. then.. its N or as Mike told me. An obvious sleep disorder..lol
I never felt refreshed after a night sleepiong, so i would spend very little time there as it wouldnt matter 10 hours or 5. I felt the same.
So im trying the zyrem, first night was freaky, second night.. umm I stayed awake until second dose time with what i call "bat cave" mouth.
Its really a journey.. and can be consuming..Im pretty sure all of us here have felt consumed by it but hopefuly stick to researching and getting for ourselfves as much information, communication and fellowship. Just to confirm we're just tired, not crazy..lol
well i can be a little wild but...
